Are you looking to buy a barcode scanner for you Milton Keynes business? This guide is for you.
What is a barcode scanner?
A barcode scanner is an EPoS peripheral device that uses light to read (capture the pattern of) printed barcodes and feed the interpreted data into a computer system.
Much like a document scanner which you would use to convert paper documents into digitised version, a barcode scanner uses light to do the same for barcodes.
How does a barcode scanner work?
It works by the transfer of light.
There is an internal light source, a lens and receiver or light sensor.
The light source emits lights, the lens magnifies and concentrates the light focusing it on the barcode patter and the sensor receives the light impulse.
The internal wiring and circuit of the barcode scanner computes the impules and presentes them in an understanderable form via the output cable to the computer.
From then on, the EPoS software inteprets the signal and relates it to a product record stored within the database which is recognised and the purchase is then internalised.
Inventory levels, price promotions etc. are all applied as per the programmed rules and the purchase is complete.
What types of barcode scanners are there?
As technology changes, so does the barcode scanner.
These have been the most marked developments in barcode scanner manufacture in recent years:
- 1 dimensional barcode scanner: capable of reading the classic black and white striped barcode
- 2 dimensional barcode scanner: can read the modern 2D black and white reflective pixel-based barcodes otherwise known as QR codes
- Omnidirectional: by using a series of scanning lines they achieve multidirectional reading making them far more accurate at successfully reading barcodes (compared with 1D scanners) that particularly have been wrinkled or faded, for example
- Mobile phone camera: via an app modern mobile phones are capable of reading 2D (QR or Quick Response) barcodes.
Where can I buy a barcode scanner?
